So you the smarty art n***a, you the smarty art n***a, but can answer me this, answer me this…can ya kick MY ass??? – Chris Rock, “Never Scared”
If you believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution you believe that life developed from non-life and stresses a purely naturalistic descent with modification. Basically, complexed life evolves from more simplistic ancestors naturally over time. Random genetic mutations occur within an organism’s genetic code, the beneficial mutations are preserved because they aid survival and mutations are passed on to the next generation.
My question is, “have we really evolved?”
(Note: I’m not here to argue science v religion, even though I could. When I speak of evolution I’m referring to our advancement as a society. Don’t preach to me with a bible or try to prove life through the periodic table. I’m not in the mood for it)
I know we claim to be a more advanced society with our advanced degrees, soy mocha lattes, MP3 players, and hybrid cars…but is that all a cover?
Take Mike Tyson for example. It’s obvious Mensa won’t be calling him anytime soon, but we loved him. Adored him. Put him on a pedestal. Why? Because as evidenced by the video below, he could rip someone’s head off.
Mixed martial arts, which former Republican presidential candidate John McCain dubbed “human cockfighting” is probably the fastest rising and highest rated sport today. It’s an art, but it’s also blood and guts. Fists and feet fly. The aim is to beat your opponent into submission…and I love it.
When people cut of off on the freeway, we curse them out and flip them “the bird.” Rational, logical are often reduced to raving lunatics. Communication is often replaced with screaming matches. It really makes you question things.
Are we the advanced society we think we are?
I’ll let you know in a few. I’m watching UFC Ultimate Knockouts right now…

Hell no we haven’t evolved! UFC is excellent proof of that. But that’s a recent phenomenon. Actually it’s more like proof that we’re de-evolving. I think a better example is the fact that the undisputed #1 sport in this country is football. Which in all honesty is a completely savage activity which just happens to have a 100% injury rate. Think about the fact that we teach our sons damn near from birth to engage in what is essentially simulated combat, that has as it’s objective to invade and occupy your enemy’s territory through violent confrontation. On top of that, the ultimate goal of every football player is to reach the Super Bowl, which is now broadcast world wide and has reached damn near religious stature. Think about it: Jesus, Muhamad, and Buddha all came back on the Saturday before Super Sunday; do you honestly think the game might be postponed?
Evolution to me is as simple as knowing what you want to do and figuring out how to do it. In the instance of MMA and boxing, it’s a carnal desire to be ruthlessly violent but normalcy wouldn’t allow us to walk down the street whooping as much ass as we’d like to so we channel it through a Mike Tyson or Chad Ochocinco and in the process become hypocrites. As much as we tell ourselves that boxing is barbaric, we still shell out money to go to the fights. To evolve from here, we as a public would need to condemn physical violence of any kind whatsoever and come down harshly on anyone breaking the rule. That’d mean the end of all contact sports and the loss of billions of dollars which we all know won’t happen. Violence is profitable and profit is what we all appreciate. Money doesn’t grow on trees; it grows in the hearts of men.
CZA, we are hypocrites. All of us. We put on airs that we’ve advance past certain things, but society tells a different story. A high school senior has a 10X better chance of getting a college scholarship through athletics than academics. Our heroes are rarely those who favor intellect over brute force.
Speaking of evolution, did you know human are the only species to drink milk after infancy? Just a thought.
They’d probably try to sell them a commercial spot before the half time show to boost ratings.
Thanks for the information on my total favorite superstar. I’ve been a massive fan for six years or more. Just wonderful.
Gotta love Iron Mike. He’s still one of the great heavyweights because of what he accomplished in his early years. The tattoo on the face is a bit much though.
