Moving On But Leaving Nothing Behind

Posted by TrueMan On February - 18 - 2010

This post has 337 words. It will take approximately 3 minutes, 22 secondes for reading it.

I’ve made no secret about the past few years for me.  They’ve been rough.  Very rough.  I’ve been on the brink of self-destruction and begun to rise from the ashes.  I’ve been kicked while I’m down.  I’ve had good time and bad times.  I’ve found out that some of the friends (and even family) I had really ain’t sh*t.

So I’m moving on.  Actually I’m moving south.  No, not Maryland south.  Not Atlanta south.  Not Miami south.

Ever been to Costa Rica?

I was offered an opportunity in Costa Rica and I’ve decided to take it.  It’s about an 18 month commitment but it can be permanent if I choose after that time.  Maybe it’s the change I need to get back on track (don’t worry, Man Among Boys will still be coming at you full force).  I’m moving on, but I’m not leaving the important things behind.

Being a man means you don’t cut and run.  You can move on but you don’t leave behind what’s important to you.  Namely, my son.

I wish I could take him with me, but he has a life here.  Him being a part of my life is a necessity, like food and water. I’ve negotiated that I can come back at least once a month to see him or he can come up to see me.  I want to make sure I’m a part of his life and that he knows I still want to be.

I’ll make sure his computer equipped with Skype and a webcam so we can see each other and talk every.  I’ll also make sure that I install Mikogo (free web conferencing service) so if he has trouble with his math homework that I can go over it with him.

I’m leaving the traffic behind.  I’m leaving the cold weather and harsh winters behind.

My son…not a chance.

Good Luck as sometimes a whole other world perspective can bring about some peace and focus on what’s important. Man now I can fly down there and party with the Costa Rican mommies!

  2. Nik says:

Wow, that’s quite a big decision and big move. Good for you. I agree with FreeMan, being away from home does wonders for a person. That’s why I love going home to Jamaica and leaving Canada behind for awhile. Looking forward to the adventures you’ll blog about. When do you leave?

I don’t know if my comment went through or the one I typed yesterday. Check your spam section.

Come through when you can. They get it in. It’s very nice there. I’m going this week to meet my staff so I’ll report back on how it went.

  5. TrueMan says:

Thanks for the love, Nik. I officially move there in late April, so I have a little time to put some things in order and wrap up the stuff I’m working on. I have to say I’m looking forward to it.

You will never ever be spam. Instantly approved :-)

Congratulations!! You’re the second Black person I’ve heard recently who moved out of the country for a better career opportunity. I think the economy is just so bad and won’t be getting any better that it’s kinda like the Great Migration.
It’s funny how a minute ago, our folks wouldn’t consider moving out of the state they grew up in, let alone out of the country. But like you mentioned, with the advances in travel and communication, you’re far from leaving your son like people had to do back in the day. Also, Costa Rica is pretty nice! I wish my parents had me going back and forth there when I was a kid. You’re son’s lucky!!

  8. TrueMan says:

Thanks, Greenbacker. I won’t like and say I’m just taking this in stride. I’m scared as all hell! Another job in another country where I don’t know anyone. I won’t let that stop me from taking a chance though.

Costa Rica is like 3.5 hours away from Atlanta flight time so you ain’t going as far as you think. And brothas and sistas are already running back and forth from there.

So you are not going into uncharted territory if that makes you feel more comfortable. In fact, I was planning to go there soon and maybe we can do a podcast together down there. You probably see more people trying to visit you than you trying to visit them.

The one thing I would add is from my experience is make sure you and your boss in Costa Rica is on fair terms. When people work international, they tend to have bosses who try to screw them over thinking the boss got cats in a stuck place.

And one more thing..you going to see some serious, beautiful women down there…that’s all for now…

The way Ed is describing it I might roll with you and get some Fresco de Frutas and guaro! Oh yeah now you just have to invite us all down for the weekend and hold our passports. 3.5 from the ATL is doable also doable if we got to get Ed out of the country fast when he gets out of hand. LMBAO

  11. TrueMan says:

It’s about 5.5 hours way from here so it’s not that far, but it’s just being away from everything I have here. But you have to take a chance and it’s as good as time as any.

Let me know if you get down there. I’d love to do a podcast together.

  12. TrueMan says:

Definitely. Let’s talk a little about expanding our blogs and some export and then party so we can write if off.

The last time I went out of the country with some cats, this one got drunk in a club and started acting a fool, calling the women hoes and grabbin’ asses. You have to mind your manners. In other countries, that whole police brutality thing gets swept under the rug.

Freeman, if I truly described Costa Rica every brotha and sista would be running down there if they knew what’s up. It only cost $149 each way from Delta when they have a sale. I believe Airtran is looking at Costa Rica in the near future.

  14. C Double R! says:

I must say you are truly a man among boys. For you to negotiate it into your contract to travel home once a month to see your son. PRICELESS!!! Not to mention all of the other things you are doing to keep in constant contact with me. Now that’s a FATHER!!

  15. TrueMan says:

Thanks, CRR. I had to do some give and take on a few things, but in the end it was worth it. Being a part of my son’s life isn’t an option, it’s a requirement for me, no matter where I’m at.

Let me know what going on with you, and remember the little people on your way up :-) .

  16. Loved this. You’ve got great priorities, in my humble little opinion. :)

  17. TrueMan says:

Welcome to Man Among Boys, and thank you for your kind words. He’s my most important priority. I can become the richest man in the world, but if I fail as his father, I’ve failed.

  18. I found your site via google thanks for the post. I will bookmark it for future reference. Thanks Sposts Bookie
